Pipes freeze where the water supply runs through areas where the temperature drops below zero. Unlike old-fashioned methods (heating the pipe with a flame, pouring hot water over it, using a heat gun), it doesn't damage the surroundings or create a fire risk. Prevention is the best method. Insulate exterior pipes and weak spots with proper pipe lagging. Use heating cables to keep pipes warm even in severe frost. Check that basements, attics and utility rooms are warm enough. In severe frost, let a little water flow (for example a dripping tap) — moving water freezes more slowly.
